Happy Pride Month Everyone!

I wanted to take a moment to celebrate Pride month and reach out to our LGBTQ+ community. I felt that in the spirit of Pride, I should share a short story with all of you. I knew that I was a lesbian when I was in high school. Girls were just a lot prettier than boys. Haha. As I moved on to college (the first time), I thought I would be able to explore my orientation more. But, due to some restrictions in the military, I was not able to truly embrace my identity until 2012. I joined the military in 2004 and for several years I was forced into a closet while wearing a uniform that represented an organization that did not appreciate who I was as an individual. It was tough to stand by and watch other “out and proud” LGBTQ+ be ridiculed or given rough treatment over the years. If you tried to stand and speak up, you would suffer the same fate or worse. Even now, most military members prefer to stay in the closet, and I am unable to agree that it is a “choice”. My mother warned me that I would have a difficult time and it still has not been the easiest road. I always wondered what my life would have been like if I had just stayed in the closet until now. I would have probably not have faced as many trials and tribulations throughout my life that have been strongly associated with being part of the LGBTQ+ community. All in all, I want to remind everyone listening out there, no matter if you are an ally or part of the LGBTQ+ mafia (as they call it), you are beautiful. You are special, unique, and deserve so much more. Be brave, live life, and continue to shine. Every day, I remind myself that no matter how dark things may seem, there is still a light. Even though I was unable to shine my light from the beginning, I encourage you to do so. Don’t forget to spread and share your Aloha! As Mai would say… Love and Light.
